McAlister Field - The "Un-subdivision" A few homes on the edges of a gently rolling meadow. Room to roam. To walk out into. Or mostly just breathing room for the heart of those whose heart is in the country. We delight to see it in a watercolor of the English countryside. Go far enough away from the city and it can still be found in our fast-growing area, for Orange County has been one of the state's most important dairy farm regions. The pasture lands, fences and silos, though disappearing, still recall a countryside both beautiful, green and tranquil. Could their be such a place to live near the heart of the town and campus? The idea of McAlister Field was to restore the twenty-some acre meadow once used by the Merritt family for dairy farming, and pretty much keep it that way. All for the benefit of a few homes that would eventually surround these peaceful views. We imagined a few horses behind a fence along private roads. As luck would have it, the first buyers wanted exactly that, and include a veterinary student who plans to do large animal practice upon graduation. Six tracts, each 10 acres in size, include some of the field, some of the beautiful hardwoods, and are protected by restrictive covenants that prevent subdivision, protect the beauty of the field, and insure well maintained, uniform fencing. A footpath and bridle easement running along the perimeter of the entire McAlister Field area, provides about two miles of pleasant walks through the woods, along creeks, and along private roads. Take picturesque Jones Ferry Road, cross the little bridge over University Lake. McAlister Field is just four miles "as the crow flies" from the heart of Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina campus. It is in the very popular Chapel Hill School District, yet buffered from town densities by the watershed restrictions, which require 5-acre average tract sizes in future development. Search all you like, there is nothing like McAlister Field. |
